Early Inspirations for the Quest
The first glimpses of what many decades later would become the scientific basis for the Milana Guide Resonance Compatibility Report began back in 1969 when Santino Mancuso was in this junior year of undergraduate studies as a psychology major. Santino read the very popular and easy-to-read book “Man and His Symbols” by Carl Jung. This fascinating and insightful book inspired voracious reading of Jung and other recognized psychologists at that time like Freud, Adler, etc.
Among all of the ideas and concepts presented by these psychologists there was one conspicuous and disturbing idea that induced great cognitive dissonance for Santino: Jung stated that he found astrology charts helpful and he conducted research on compatibility that suggested that some of the rules of astrology were statistically verifiable!
How could a man as intelligent and educated as Carl Jung believe that the planetary placements as described by astrologers actually affect human life? If this is true, then there is a powerful ancient system for personality assessment virtually completely untapped by modern science! The quest to determine whether Jung was correct began.
The Quest Begins
From 1972 to about 2015 Santino interviewed and consulted thousands of people to see if astrology could be useful, as Jung claimed. He developed astrology software and conducted research. He spoke at international conferences and won various awards for his insights and contributions, but the question that arose in 1969 was still unanswered. The question had now been restated as “Do astrological variables produce measurable effects?” In other words, can research show that planetary positions as described by astrologers correlate with human behavior or human personality traits in a way that can be confirmed using modern research methods?
First Glimpses of the Cosmic Connection
By the early 2000s and 3 decades of persistent effort, it began to feel like confirmation of any astrological ideas using modern research methods was very unlikely. Santino found that the famous research of Michel Gauquelin which supposedly confirmed an astrological idea was not as impressive as Gauquelin claimed. There are now over 800 YouTube tutorial videos that Santino has uploaded on astrology and science, and two of the videos are about the weaknesses in Gauquelin’s research findings.
A glimmer of hope that there is a correlation between planetary positions and human behavior in 2007.
It was found that there are intricate harmonic planetary configurations associated with different professional groups. Another study was one on introversion-extraversion conducted with psychology professor David Fink and supervised by professors at the University of Florida in an MA program in Research and Evaluation Methodology that Santino completed. This study also showed promising results. Additional research on accidents, musicians, athletes and others supported the principles that there is a resonance between people and the cosmos that is formed through intricate resonant patterns (more on this below).
A key point here is that the results were promising. They fall far short of the kind of rigorous confirmation that modern research methods require, especially from an idea as far outside the domain of current knowledge as a connection of human behavior with planetary positions.
The Breakthrough and the Birth of Resonance Cosmobiology
The gold standard in many academic fields is a strict hypothesis test. A successful hypothesis test is often the crowning achievement of previous research that gradually leads one to the top of the summit. Replication of the hypothesis test under different conditions further cements our confidence in the idea that the research is evaluating. A hypothesis test is a simple idea: the researcher states very clearly and unambiguously what is expected from the data, the data is collected in a manner that meets the criteria for proper sampling and a proper control group, and the results of the research are evaluated using standard statistical tests. Even slight ambiguities in the hypothesis, weaknesses in the way the data was collected, or other weaknesses in the research process weaken our confidence in the conclusions that we can draw from the research. Because research happens in the real world, there are often limitations and weaknesses in research that weaken, but do not completely destroy, our confidence in the statistical results of the research.
The Breakthrough Discovery: Around 2015 Santino began intensive research with Marriage and Family Therapist Gisele Terry to determine if people with mental illness were born at times when particular planetary configurations are more likely to occur. The research went through multiple phases beginning with looking at the birth charts of some of Gisele’s clients and culminating in a strict hypothesis test. The entire research project was carefully conducted in a series of stages starting with applying the principles of cosmic resonance to some of Gisele’s clients, to building a detailed model with 912 people who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder to the culmination of a strict hypothesis test that produced very positive results.
The Model for Bipolar Disorder Vulnerability: What was learned from studying the birth charts of Gisele’s clients was applied to the birth charts of 912 people who were diagnosed with bipolar disorder. A formula was developed that distinguished between people who were diagnosed with bipolar disorder and a control group with a probability of less than 1 in a million. Very importantly, the formula was elegant. By “elegant” we mean that the formula did not contain a set of arbitrary factors. The set of “predictor variables” as researchers call them, is consistent and consistent with the theories that were developed over years of previous research. Also, the control group is what researchers in this field call a shuffled control group, and the shuffled control group is artificially made to be more similar to the experimental group than any group of actual people. This is an extremely conservative control group. In layman’s terms, this simply means that the research was very carefully conducted and that it is very unlikely that there is a flaw in the research design that biased the results to be more positive than they really are. Also, the formula was not optimized in that the correlation coefficients of all predictor variables was set to the same value. An optimized formula that matches more precisely the weights in this training data would improve the p-values. The extremely conservative control group and the elegance of the formula increase the confidence that researchers have that the results can be confirmed in a strict hypothesis test.
However, this model building research with 912 cases of people with bipolar disorder is only a preliminary step towards the crowning step of a strict hypothesis test. Fortunately, 108 more cases of people with bipolar disorder were obtained. The 912 cases of bipolar disorder are called training data. The 108 cases are the test data. The formula obtained from the research on 912 training cases of bipolar disorder is applied to these new 108 test cases. A shuffled control group is created for the 108 cases of bipolar disorder. This is the strict hypothesis test. The two big questions are: (1) Will a statistically significant p-value be obtained (p-value less than .05) and (2) Will the Effect Size be reasonably high, such as at least 50% as high as the Effect Size obtained with the 912 training data.
We hear a lot about p-values from research. The term “statistically significant” is frequently used for a p-value less than .05. However, suppose you have a treatment, such as drug or vitamin, that decreases the likelihood of getting a particular disease by 25%. If you test the treatment on 1,000 people the p-value will be much better than if you test it on 100 people! The 25% improvement in prevention of the disease is the Effect Size. You can think of Effect Size as how well the treatment works. The more people you test with the treatment, the better the p-value. In statistical terminology we say that a statistical test has more power with a larger sample size. Consequently, the Effect Size is at least as important, and arguably more important, than the p-value. We want to know if the variable we are studying is working as well with the new data as with the previous data, and the Effect Size is a good measure of this. The p-value is also extremely important, but with small sample sizes it is impossible for the same predictor variables to produce as good a p-value as can be obtained with larger sample sizes.
So what happened in the hypothesis test?
The 108 test cases produced a p-value less than .05 and an Effect Size that was larger than the Effect Size with the training data! This is an extraordinarily positive result! Effect Sizes are almost always lower with the Test Data than with the Training Data. How could this formula work better with test data than the data it was trained on? With the 912 training data the people with bipolar disorder scored 10% higher on bipolar disorder vulnerability, and the 108 test cases scored 12% higher. Perhaps the 912 cases had a greater range of symptoms and were not as clearly and thoroughly diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. The 912 cases were obtained from hospital records and we have no details about the diagnosis. We have only their birth data and whether the person is male or female.
Resonance Cosmobiology Is Not Astrology
Astrologers use information like zodiac signs, house placements, sign rulerships and basic aspects. For example, astrologers will say things like “I am a Gemini with Moon in Leo and the ruler of the Ascendant in the third house square Jupiter”. They put a lot of emphasis on analyzing the whole chart even though their analyses are rarely confirmed even when they are given the opportunity to interpret the whole chart.
Resonance Cosmobiology analyzes requires an intricate pattern analysis performed by a computer. A human being cannot see these intricate patterns. For example, research indicates that people with bipolar disorder have particular planets separated in divisions of 44th of a circle. We will not go into these technical details here, but suffice it to say that Resoanance Cosmobiology and Astrology have extremely little in common other than the idea that there is a correlation between planetary positions and human behavior. Astrology views these correlations as a symbolic language and Resonance Cosmobiology views them as energetic processes produced by intricate wave patterns. The mechanism, the way that the correlations are produced and the variables involved in the correlations are very different. Our research does not confirm the beliefs of astrologers.
Practical Applications for Consulting and Forecasting
The range of possible applications of Resonance Cosmobiology is enormous. For example, in the book “The Astrology of Bipolar Disorder: A Scientific Breakthrough” by Santino (aka David Cochrane) graphs of vulnerability to mental and emotional distress were produced by the algorithm entered into the computer for actresses and singers Juday Garland and Marilyn Monroe. Both women died of a drug overdose. The graphs for emotional distress peak exactly when the deaths occurred when they were clearly experiencing a peak in emotional stress.
Figure 1. Judy Garland’s death by drug overdose occurs at precisely the time of peaking of he graph. The first graph shows the long term trend and the second graph shows the short term trend. Both graphs peak at exactly the time of the drug overdose. The formula used was not adjusted to make the graphs work. The formula was entered into the software and the graph was produced.
Figure 2. Marilyn Monroe’s death by drug overdose occurs at the highest peak in her graph for emotional stress / hypersensitivity in the year 1962. The graph was not adjusted to peak at this time. The formula was entered into the computer and the graph was produced.
The Discovery of Resonance Cosmobiology Between Married Couples
Michel and Francoise Gauquelin collected the birth data, including the time of birth, for over 20,000 married couples. This data is a goldmine for data scientists! Very few astrologers even know about this data and they do not care about it because they prefer to trust their personal experience above all else. Furthermore, analysis of the zodiac relationships between these married couples contradicts the beliefs of astrologers. Astrologers state the planets in the same element are compatible. For example, people with Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Venus and Mars in signs of the same element (like Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, for example) are more compatible. Perhaps they are more compatible but very strangely they are unaware of this compatibility because research indicates that they do not marry each other. These married couples also had at least one child so their relationships were reasonably stable and long-lasting. In fact, signs that are quincunx to each other were slightly more likely to marry each other. These sign combinations are supposedly incompatible according to astrologers! The beliefs of astrologers are repeatedly not confirmed by research.
The vibrational patterns found between married couples in the data that was analyzed are likely to occur by chance less than one in a thousand times (p<.001). Because the same rigor is applied to this research as was applied to the research on bipolar disorder, we are confident that these findings will be confirmed in future research. Also important is that just as computer technology advances rapidly, ongoing research is making it possible for Resonance Cosmobiology to advance rapidly. Early adopters of this technology not only can leverage the breakthrough discoveries that have already been made, they are in a position to utilize future improvements and developments in a wide spectrum of business and social service applications.
Intricate vibrational patterns that are theoretically consistent with what was discovered in the research on bipolar disorder and other research do occur between married couples! These vibrational patterns that occur with statistically significant tendencies in the research data are meticulously and carefully programmed into the Milana Compatibility Report and are interpreted. Resonance Cosmobiology is a kind of modern evidence-based form of astrology that is as different from astrology as chemistry is from alchemy. This new evidence-based discipline that analyzes fractal cosmic vibrational resonance is, for the first time, applied to human relationships in a way that is easily accessible and useful for matching services of all kinds. Resonance Cosmobiology is going to shake up the world just as other innovations like the understanding of the electromagnetic spectrum and electricity have opened the door to radio, television, satellite communications, etc. Resonance Cosmobiology is a new technology in its infancy and we are confident that a century from now it will be mainstream, universally accepted, and applied in many ways to provide useful and actionable information.
